How it works

With SpecCapture, step by step.

  1. Upload

Upload PDFs exported from CAD, or scans, up to 50 MB and 200 sheets a file. Each sheet is read on its own, in the background.

  2. Read

SpecCapture reads each sheet's title block and every row of its parts list (item number, quantity, part number, description and material). Rules that work the same way every time check dates, revision letters, material specifications and units.

  3. Check

Select any value to see the box on the drawing it was read from. Values SpecCapture is unsure of are flagged; correct one in place and the export carries your correction.

  4. Load it in

Download an Excel workbook or CSV files, with one row per sheet and one row per parts-list row, and load them with your system's own import. Or have your software fetch the values through the API when a webhook says a file is done.

What to check

Before you rely on it.

  • Everything is reviewed at first

A new workspace starts with every value waiting for a person. A field is accepted automatically only after 20 confirmations in a row with no correction, and exports mark whatever is still waiting.

  • No built-in connector

There is no built-in connector to any ERP, MRP or quoting system: you load the Excel (XLSX) or CSV export with your system's own import, or your software writes the values in through the REST API, with a signed webhook when each file is finished. The export's columns are named after the drawing's fields (Part Number, Revision and so on), so map them once in your import.

  • How often it is right

On PDFs exported from CAD, in drawing styles it has been tuned on, SpecCapture read the critical fields (part number, revision, material and finish) right 97.4% of the time. On drawings it was seeing for the first time it did worse: 85.6% on 35 new sheets in styles it knew, and 88.4% on 9 sheets in three styles it had never seen. Your drawings are new to it, so the first-run figures are the better guide until it has been checked on them.

  • Expect to wait

Each sheet is read on its own, in the background: on our test drawings a sheet took 36 to 49 seconds on average.

Questions

What people ask.

What are the alternatives to manually typing data from engineering drawings into our ERP?

If the drawings came out of your own CAD or PDM system, export the data from there: it is the source. For drawings you have only as PDFs, scans or paper, such as customer prints or an old archive, the choices are to keep retyping them, to run plain OCR, which returns the page's text without saying which words are the part number, or to use a tool that reads drawings field by field. SpecCapture is one: it returns each value under its field's name, with a box on the drawing and a confidence level, for a person to check before it goes into the ERP.

Does SpecCapture connect directly to my ERP?

No. There is no built-in connector to any ERP, MRP or quoting system: you load the Excel (XLSX) or CSV export with your system's own import, or your software writes the values in through the REST API, with a signed webhook when each file is finished.

How can I automate entering part numbers and materials from drawings into a spreadsheet?

Upload the drawings to SpecCapture: it reads each sheet's part number, revision, material, finish and the rest of the title block into one spreadsheet row per sheet, and every parts-list row into a tab of its own, which you download as an Excel workbook or CSV files. Each uploaded file exports on its own, as one workbook, one set of CSV files or one JSON file, so to keep a batch together, combine its sheets into one PDF or TIFF file, or collect every file's values through the API.

Does a person still have to check the values?

Yes, at first. A new workspace starts with every value waiting for a person to confirm it; a field is accepted automatically only after people have confirmed its values 20 times in a row with no correction, and even then only when SpecCapture is confident in the value. Exports mark every value still waiting for review, so nothing unchecked passes as final.

How much does it cost per drawing?

A sheet is one page of a drawing file, so a three-sheet PDF uses three. Starter is $79 a month for 100 drawing sheets; Pro $199 for 350, Business $499 for 1,100 and Scale $999 for 3,750. Used in full, a plan's sheets cost from 79 cents each on Starter down to 27 cents each on Scale. Credit packs need no plan: 60 sheets for $60, 275 for $250 or 700 for $600, each one payment. A pack's sheets count for 12 months, and a workspace on a plan uses its plan's sheets first. SpecCapture starts with a free trial: 25 sheets over 14 days for $0, with no card needed and every feature included. SpecCapture is not open for sign-ups yet; the free trial and these prices are what it is planned to open with.
