# SpecCapture > SpecCapture reads 2D engineering drawings and turns their title blocks, revision history and bills of materials, and their general notes once you turn them on, into data you can export to Excel, CSV or JSON, or fetch through an API. Every value comes with a box on the drawing showing where it was read and a confidence level, and values it is unsure of wait for a person to check them. SpecCapture is in early access and not yet open for sign-ups; leave your email at https://speccapture.com/#early-access to hear when it opens. The full text of the product pages and the API docs, as one Markdown file: https://speccapture.com/llms-full.txt ## Facts - What it reads: From the title block: part number; drawing number; revision; title; material; stock size; finish or coating, and plating specification; surface roughness; heat treatment; scale; units; sheet size; sheet number and sheet count; who drew, checked and approved it, with the dates; weight; general tolerances for fractions, decimals (by number of places) and angles (bends apart, where the block gives them their own); projection angle; drawing standard; CAGE code; and export-control marking. Every row of the revision history (revision, description, date, approved by); bill of materials (item number, quantity, part number, description, material); hole table (tag, size, quantity, depth); application block (next assembly, used on); and tabulated dash numbers (dash number, description). The general notes, each in full and in order: off unless you turn them on, and then every one checked by a person. - Revision history: SpecCapture reads every row of a drawing's revision history (revision, description, date and approved by) and exports the rows to the Revision History tab of an Excel workbook, to revisionHistory.csv in the CSV download, or to JSON. Each row starts with the sheet it came from and its row number, each value sits beside its review state and confidence, and many uploaded files can be exported together as one file. - Quoting: From a customer's drawing, SpecCapture reads what a quote starts from: the part number and revision, material, stock size, finish and plating, heat treatment, surface roughness and the general tolerances from the title block, and every row of the hole table and the bill of materials, each value with a box on the drawing showing where it was read. It reads the facts a quote starts from, such as the material, finish and general tolerances, but it does not price a job, and it does not read every dimension or balloon a drawing for inspection. - Files: It accepts PDF, TIFF, PNG, JPEG, BMP and WebP files; GIF files are not accepted. A PDF or TIFF file can hold up to 200 sheets; an image is one sheet. A file can be up to 50 MB, and a sheet up to 150 million pixels, which fits a D-size sheet scanned at 400 dpi, or an E-size or A0 sheet at 300 dpi. - Exports: Results download as Excel (XLSX), CSV or JSON, or come through a REST API, which can also send a signed webhook when a file is finished. Many uploaded files export together as one workbook, one set of CSV files or one JSON file: tick them in the app and choose a format, or ask the API for them in one request (POST /v1/exports). - AI assistants: SpecCapture also works from AI assistants such as Claude, GitHub Copilot in VS Code and Cursor: its MCP server at https://api.speccapture.com/mcp lets them send drawings and read their values, with the same API keys. Setup for each: https://speccapture.com/docs/ai-assistants/ - Checks: Every value it reads comes with a box around the place on the drawing it was read from, so checking it takes a glance. Each value gets a confidence level, and a value that fails a rule, was written by hand, or that SpecCapture is unsure of is flagged for a person to check. A new workspace starts with every value waiting for a person to confirm it; a field is accepted automatically only after people have confirmed its values 20 times in a row with no correction, and even then only when SpecCapture is confident in the value. - Prices: SpecCapture starts with a free trial: 25 sheets over 14 days for $0, with no card needed and every feature included. After the trial, a workspace on no plan gets 10 sheets free every month, renewed at the start of each month (UTC), when its owner signs in with Google, a Microsoft account or a confirmed email address: one allowance per person, and sheets left unused do not carry over. Starter is $79 a month for 100 drawing sheets; Pro $199 for 350, Business $499 for 1,100 and Scale $999 for 3,750. Credit packs need no plan: 60 sheets for $60, 275 for $250 or 700 for $600, each one payment. A pack's sheets count for 12 months, and a workspace on a plan uses its plan's sheets first. A sheet is one page of a drawing file, so a three-sheet PDF uses three. Prices are per workspace: everyone in it shares the plan, with no charge per user. SpecCapture is not open for sign-ups yet; the free trial and these prices are what it is planned to open with. Details: https://speccapture.com/pricing/ - Measured accuracy: On PDFs exported from CAD, in drawing styles it has been tuned on, SpecCapture read the critical fields (part number, revision, material and finish) right 97.4% of the time. On drawings it was seeing for the first time it did worse: 85.6% on 35 new sheets in styles it knew, and 88.4% on 9 sheets in three styles it had never seen. Scans are weaker: the critical fields came out right 82.1% of the time on 1960s microfilm scans and 58.6% on drawings scanned from old printed reports. How it was measured: https://speccapture.com/at-a-glance/#accuracy - Your drawings: Your drawings are not used to train AI models that anyone else uses. You choose how long drawings are kept, 0, 7, 30 or 90 days; then the file, its page images and the marks showing where each value was read are deleted automatically, and the values read from it stay until you delete the drawing or your workspace. New workspaces start at 30 days. SpecCapture is not for export-controlled drawings, such as those covered by ITAR or the EAR. - Free tools, in the browser with no sign-up: The thread callout decoder explains a callout such as 1/4-20 UNC-2A, M10x1.5-6g or 1/4-18 NPT part by part: the series, the size, the threads per inch or pitch, the class, whether the thread is internal or external, its hand and its basic diameters, from ASME B1.1, ISO 261 and ISO 965-1. The surface finish converter turns an Ra in micrometers into microinches and back exactly (a microinch is 0.0254 micrometer), names its ISO 1302 roughness grade from N1 to N12, and gives Rz only as an approximate range, because no standard converts Ra to Rz. The GD&T symbol reference draws and explains, in a sentence each, the geometric characteristics of ASME Y14.5 and ISO 1101 (form, profile, orientation, location and runout), their modifiers, and the dimensioning and datum symbols that go with them, searchable and ready to copy; its reader explains a feature control frame typed as text, box by box and aloud. The drawing sheet sizes page lists the ANSI sizes A to E of ASME Y14.1 and the ISO 216 sizes A0 to A4 in inches and millimeters, explains where the title block and the zones go, and names the standard size of a print or a scan from its width and height. A welding symbol is a horizontal reference line with an arrow pointing at the joint: a weld symbol below the line calls for the weld on the arrow side, one above it for the other side, with the weld's size to the left of the symbol, its length and pitch to the right, and a process or specification in the tail at the far end. The weld symbol chart draws and explains each part of the AWS A2.4 welding symbol - the weld and groove weld symbols, supplementary symbols such as weld all around and field weld, the dimensions, and the finishing and process letters - and its reader explains a welding symbol written in words, part by part and aloud. - Reference guides to reading engineering drawings, free to read at https://speccapture.com/guides/: The title block is the boxed table in the lower right corner of an engineering drawing that identifies it: the drawing number, title, revision, sheet size, scale, sheet number and the CAGE code of the company that owns the design, with who drew, checked and approved it. Beside it sit the default tolerances for every dimension that has none of its own, the material and finish, and the assembly the part goes into. The revision history block, usually in the upper right corner of an engineering drawing, records every change made to the drawing after its release: the revision letter, what changed, the date and who approved it, often with the zone where the change was made and the change order that authorized it. The current revision is the one furthest along the letter sequence, and it should match the REV box in the title block. On an engineering drawing, the bill of materials is the parts list: a table, usually just above the title block, giving each item's find number, the quantity needed for one assembly, its part number, its description and often its material or specification. Each find number is repeated in a balloon on the drawing's views, pointing at the part it names. General notes are the numbered notes under the heading NOTES that apply to the whole drawing, such as the standard it is read by, the finish, edge breaks, marking and heat treatment; a flag note applies only where its number appears in a flag symbol on the views. A requirement stated at a feature takes precedence over a general one, which is what UNLESS OTHERWISE SPECIFIED means. Engineering drawings abbreviate in capital letters, and in the US the accepted forms are listed by ASME Y14.38: ASSY for assembly, DWG for drawing, MATL for material, THRU for through, TYP for typical. This glossary gives the common ones, what each stands for and where it comes from, searchable by abbreviation or meaning. ## Product - [SpecCapture](https://speccapture.com/): SpecCapture reads title blocks, parts lists and revision history off engineering drawings, with a box on the drawing for every value.
